I broke the treadmill. I was in the midst of running my last quarter mile at a 5:45 pace and the treadmill flashed an error. (SPEED CHECK SYSTEMS) Not sure what the overall pace for the run was due to the shutdown, but it was probably similar to yesterday's pace.

I felt awful during the beginning of this run.  It was 14' degrees out, but the windchill made it significantly colder.  It probably didn't help that I ate 3/4 of a 2 lb meatloaf last night as well.  Oh yeah..... I had a couple of tequila drinks too.  I'm smart!  7:14 avg.

You will love Boston. I enjoy the weekend and all the festivities way more than the actual race, but the race isn't bad though, especially the first time you do it. Have fun! Absorb it all in. You earned it.

My family and I have watched the past 4 Bostons at mile 19 in Newton. It's such a fun day. Tom K from the blog was kind enough to let me tag along with him to pick up his number and poke around the expo last year. Very exciting. It also doesn't hurt that I live 30 or so minutes west of the city. Good luck with the rest of your training.

Rhett... it hasn't snowed in a couple of days, but there is just so much of it and zero melting. It's more of a danger factor since there are no sidewalks or shoulders available. Coming around corners is tricky as well, you can't see beyond the snow banks since they are so tall. I just finished an outside run though!

Stu’s 30K Road Race

For over 30 years, Stu’s 30K has been a tune-up run for the Boston Marathon.

This was a quick race decision on my part.  Jim Maloy my co-worker/running buddy texted me yesterday and asked if I had any interest in running this classic hilly New England tune up for Boston.  There definitely were some long climbs and good descents.  I stuck with Jim for the first 14 miles and then decided to see what I had left for the last 4 and change.  Apparently I had a bit more as I dropped the pace to below 7 minute miles and picked up 15 places.  Within the final 2 miles, I set my sights on a girl wearing pink compression socks and a Greater Boston Track Club singlet over a long sleeve.  She was a competitor and definitely didn't appreciate me running up on her shoulder.  She pushed to hold me off, but I wasn't there to play nice and kicked by her and one other dude farther up ahead in the final stretch.  I was definitely pleased with this long effort as I ran 10.5 miles yesterday and have come off of two 60 mile weeks. (I've never run two back to back 60 mile weeks)  7:23 avg.

I ran about 2 miles to meet up with Kris and then we started running together.  With yesterday's 9 and change, I wasn't to amped up for the long run, but as the miles and conversation passed, we started moving along decently.  This is definitely an honest route with nice climbs and rolling terrain.  Kris even showed me where he ran into "Boston" Billy Rodgers on his run yesterday.  It was on a hill no less!  The guy still gets out there and gets after it at 68 years old!  After Kris turned off torwards his house and I continued on torwards mine, I started to bonk a bit.  I sucked down a GU and kept going.  I made it back to my driveway and was done.  7:22 avg.   Or so I thought........

With my best friend and wife!  It felt good to flush out some lactic acid and keep moving. We saw two hawks having a little tussle up on the roof of a house and then it moved to a tree. Really cool.

Tempo fail. 6:48, 7:11, 6:28, 7:08, 6:33. I thought that I would jump right into a tempo with no easing in. Big mistake. The first mile which wasn't all that fast killed me. I backed off for the second and then hit the third mile which was mostly down hill faster. Then backed off again from feeling like I was working too hard. I sped up again for the last mile which started uphill and finished down/flat. Overall 6:50 avg, but not pleased with the inconsistent nature of the workout or my wimpiness.

Sub 3. I get it. Sub 3 at Boston? You certainly have the ability, regardless of how deep you're reading into this one run. You do what you want, but if I had it all to do over again, I would have run Boston for the experience of it, made sure I didn't go out too fast, and not given a .... about my time.

Nah I agree that's a tempo fail for you. But it's explainable..

For me I need 3 full recovery days after a hard 20 to even think about a workout. Plus you've put together a few weeks of 60-ish miles, more than you're used to, and that's about when the heavy legs start.

i like to set the bar low in my mind on the MP tempos, especially when I'm in the thick of marathon training and have those heavy legs. other workouts I might jump right into goal pace but for MP I set a really easy target at first, then if I feel like it, start dropping the pace.

DRun, it's just a good reminder that you need to warm up a bit before hitting tempo pace. The next time you do it with a good warm up, you'll nail it. Also, I think for a sub 3 marathon, a tempo pace at 6:30 should do the trick.

Holy crap!  What an experience.

I took the redline to the Boston Common and checked my gear bag.  Probably about 30 minutes later I loaded onto a bus bound for Hopkinton.  Once in Hopkinton at Athletes Village, I headed right for the Port-O-Johns and then scurried to the tent to relax and stay dry.

At 10:25 and after a .70 mile walk to the start, my corral was released for a great journey.  I was definitely swept up in the adrenaline and just rolled with it.  I went through the half in 1:31 but was already feeling the downhill punishment on the quads.  I believe that I was fueling well, but it was concerning that things were deteriorating so early.  I was taking solice in the fact that I would see my family soon right around mile 17.  As I approached Newton Wellesley Hospital at the 17 mile marker, I was scanning the crowds frantically looking for my wife and girls.  "Damn!"  I was saying to myself, how did we miss eachother?  I was just hoping that maybe the streets closed before they could get there and that I would meet them at our old spectacting spot....... mile 19.  As I approached the mile 19 marker, I spotted my youngest's pink winter coat and put on my best fake smile.  I stopped and kissed my family and told my wife that I was falling apart.  She said "You're still running a 7:03 pace!" and sent me on running.  I had felt my hamsting twinge a few times along the course, and I was hoping the cramps that I have experienced in other marathons would hold off, but it was not to be.  As I was heading up the hill before Heartbreak, my right hamstring locked up reducing me to a skip/walk.  I immediately jammed my fingers into the area and after about 20 or so seconds, I was able to carry on at a reduced pace.  Then, as I was heading up Heartbreak, my right hamstring locked and I repeated the process losing more time.  I knew right then and there that this was going to be a 5 mile slog to the finish.

In terms of the weather, it was cold, windy and raining.  I definitely think I had a touch of hypothermia and it didn't help that I was pouring water and gatorade down my face and chest every time I attempted to drink.  

The damn Citgo sign taunted me for what seemed like forever!  I tried pushing as hard as I could as I turned right on Hereford and down the final stretch.  I had nothing though.  In the finishers chute I was wobbling a bit and one of the million amazing volunteers wrapped me in the mylar hooded blanket like a Jedi Knight.  The FORCE wasn't with me though, as my hands couldn't open anything and I was having uncontrollable cold induced tremors.  I shuffled back to the Boston Common and amazingly my wife found me and helped me to my dry clothes.  I love my wife and family so much for the support and love on a nasty cold day.  Amy, Maggie & Paige...... You were the MVP's of our 2015 Boston Marathon!

Great race and great report. And great pictures, I feel like I would recognize you anywhere now, if only I could get to the finish line before you are already showered and on your second steak. The hypothermia was real. My son heard my symptoms and said I was lucky to make it to my hotel bed instead of a hospital bed. Really impressive run for you -- amazing that you could come that close to your PR with those hamstring issues. Probably one of the better runs of the day, and certainly bodes well for that sub-3 you have in your gunsights.

AM - 4.65 mile walk

My wife and I went out this morning before the heavy rain and had a great walk.  When we crossed over the rail road bridge on rt. 27, we took a left onto High St and spotted a beautiful deer about 150 yards up on the left.  We stopped and stared at her for quite some time..... awesome.

Afternoon - 10.07 miles

There was a break in the rain at 1:30 and I went for it.  3 miles later, the sky opened up on me.  Soaked to the bone, but it cooled me down a bit.  8:12 avg. - HR 150 bpm

Hey Joe,

On Sep. 6th this race takes place. I thought that it would be a cool adventure type race until my buddy Kris and I previewed about 10 miles of it on Sunday. I quickly realized that this is a different kind of running. The kind of running that rewards the well rounded, strong runner and spits out the one dimensional weak runner. I am the latter.

The cool thing about Strava is once you follow someone, you can poach their running routes and try something different.  You do in fact have to know where you are going once you pop out of the woods onto an unfamiliar road.  My 50/50 chance of going left or right turned into the wrong decision and I had to call my wife from the next town over after running 11.8 miles.  

I normally would have slogged it home those extra 5 miles, but instead of pissing people off and ruining the opportunity to do other things on a Sunday, I called for a ride and saved the day.  I did not beat the eight minute man today.

Tornado warnings today in Massachussetts...... crazy.  Anyways, after the rain, wind and hail passed through, my daughter Paige (9yrs old) and I went for a run.  I originally asked her if she wanted to run a mile or two, but once we were rolling I asked her, "Wouldn't it be cool to see if you could run a 5k?"  She immediately latched on to the idea and we ended up running a tad more.  We came through the 5k in 29:46 and we were conversational the whole time.  Really proud of my youngest daughter today :)

I was beating myself up for the run fail this morning.  I went out for a redemption run and it was painful.  I don't know if I could break 20 minutes in a 5k right now.  It seems that all the slow heart rate based running has only made me slower.  I know it takes a while to see and feel the gains of heart rate training, but aint nobody got time for that!

I'm feeling the same way with the low HR training. I've been at it for 7 weeks so far and have seen no improvements. They say it can take 3 to 6 months to see improvements. I've gone this long, so I'm sticking with it. The science behind it all seems to make sense. If I had an upcoming marathon, I'd probably give in and start running fast.

Sugarloaf is a fast course. Flat until mile 7ish with some good uphills here and there until mile 10, then buckle up! It's no St. George but it's got some nice downhills in addition to some out of control ones.

One word of warming: not a closed course (fully or partially). Traffic is slow but you have to think extra hard about running a tangent with no visibility.

A good place to go sub-3:00 for sure.

If I run Sugarloaf I'm going for the $$. I do want to run it again at some point.

If you go out too fast you might get chewed by the hills at miles 7-10, which are fairly significant. I averaged 6:35 and I ran 7:00+ on the hills and it was still harder than the effort up to that point. I started out running roughly 3 hour pace. Do not go out ahead of pace in any marathon is my best advice (unless you are seasoned and running maybe 2:35 or faster).

Yes. I suppose it would be forgiving if you went out too fast. However, if downhills beat you up then early pounding and fatigue are going to show up more.

I'd run 7:00 pace for the first few miles working down slightly to be pretty much on pace by mile 10, then maintain good form on the downhills and hit sub-goal splits where you can without going too fast. I think I split it 1:27/1:25. A two minute negative split is a sensibly paced race on that course I think. You can find my report in my races from 2013.
