Nice run with some bushwacking at the end.  I went through the woods at about the eighth mile, crossed some power lines trying to not look a deer (hunters) and came out behind some houses on a dead end street to finish the last mile.  Good run.

Nice slow run.  I notice that when I run slower, my muscles seem more fatigued?  Maybe the longer drawn out motion engages the muscles for a longer period of time?  No se.

My wife Amy has started the Couch to 5k training program.  She is by no means a couch potato, but she said that she sees the fastest results (body wise) when she jogs rather than walks.  In the past I think that she has been a little over ambitious with running and has strained muscles and thrown her hips out of wack with starting too strong.  I think that most people have done the same.

Anyways, we headed to the track yesterday for the first workout..... always fun doing anything with my wife.

I felt really good on this one.  Faster than a speeding locomotive...... literally.  There is a point on this run where I have to cross double railroad tracks and for the first time ever, a train was really close.  Needless to say, I went for it and got the attention of the conductor with a blaring train whistle.  Just like Superman?  You betcha!

GROTON ROAD RACE

Tot-trot: my youngest daughter Paige!

Paige, my youngest daughter was first to run.  She's a very competitive 6 year old who does not like to lose.  I could see the intensity immediately today when she was overly concerned about the other runners encroaching on her start line position.  Paige ran a great race and was hindered by the starting ribbon getting wrapped around her head :(  She was the first girl across the finish nonetheless.  Great race Paige!

2K with my daughter Maggie! - (1.2 miles)

Last year's race, Maggie went out way too fast and fizzled in the middle a bit with a finishing time of 11:22 or so...... this year she kept it more conservative at the start and shaved off a bunch of time finishing with a 10:33!  Way to go Maggie!

5K - 19:08 - 6:10 avg.

I wasn't exactly sure where I was fitness wise before this race, but I'm pleased with the outcome.  I definitely had a tiny bit more in the tank, but the effort was very controlled and even.

6 miles - treadmill

It's raining like a bugger today in Massachusetts.... relegated to the treadmill. 

Highlight of the run was when it was getting hot in the basement and I decided to take my shirt off mid stride.  I ended up losing my balance and stepping off the edge of the mill.... being the smart guy that I am tried to regain composure and step back on.  I almost got spit off the back of the angry beast, but pulled off some acrobatics and avoided a total yardsale!

1.2 miles with my wife & 12 miles solo -7:45 avg.

My wife completed a mile on the track last weekend, and this morning we decided to hit the road.  2k in the books for Amy!  Nice job hon!

I then decided to go out for a semi-long run in the heat of the day.  I brought water & a GU with me this time and I was glad that I did.  You've got to keep the system lubricated!  At mile eight I took some Gu and got some hard pieces along with some regular consistency in the first squeeze?  I spit out the chunks and flipped the wrapper upside down for the expiration date.  Good until 2010..... there it was, Gross!  All in all, a great day.

Great run today with Kris an avid runner who lives about a mile from my house.  Kris has some great trail runs mapped out in the surrounding towns, so we hooked up for a jaunt.  I haven't run with anybody for any significant distance since I started running again a couple of years ago, so I was more than happy for some company!  Some great trails that I will definitely be frequenting in the near future.  We both took some spills and had some great conversation.

Always enjoyable being outside with Amy.  We spooked a deer early on in the walk when we were down by the river, and then saw 3 or 4 rabbits along the route.

The wildlife has been awesome around here lately..... as we were sitting on the screened in porch drinking our morning coffee, Amy spotted a fox running down our street!  I sprung up out of my seat just in time to see it duck behind our neighbor's house.  Good stuff!

I'm out by 5:30 most mornings and that's early. 3:30 suggests you need help; perhaps your local insomniac group might remedy your sleep disorder - they're open 24/7:) Furthermore, dipping below 7:30 pace at that time is comendable. 8.65 miles - 7:33 avg.

After reading on this blog site, that even Jake Krong runs at an 8 min. pace from time to time, I thought to myself.... hey, I can run an 8 min. pace.  Even better..... I can run slower than an 8 min. pace!  Everything was going according to plan, up until about mile 7 when I couldn't help but pick it up a bit near the end of the run.  It didn't help that I saw a runner about 400 yards ahead of me moving at a good clip down River St.  There was my carrot!  It turns out that she was moving at a very good pace, because I didn't catch her until I was nearing the end of my run about a mile later.  I passed her going over a little knoll in the road, and just as I was passing, a police cruiser crested the other side of the blind knoll.  I glanced over just as the cop was waving his arms inside his car.  My reaction was WTF???? and I proceeded to mimick him and wave my arms back with a similiar nasty look.  I thought that I was going to get spoken to, but nothing materialized from the encounter..... good thing for me, because I was definitely rubbed the wrong way!  Dirty Copper!  Ha ha!

Last night, before I went to bed, I checked the forecast for the early hours of the morning.  Everything looked ok, with only a 20% chance of precipitation..... perfect. 

Since it's been so hot & humid in New England this summer I have been running shirtless in the wee hours of the am.  As I stepped out the door, there was a light sprinkle coming down with a nice warm breeze.  There's my 20% I thought.  I slowly got the old legs moving and started feeling more awake when out from the left side of the road a skunk crossed in front of me about 10 ft. away.  The skunk stopped me in my tracks and faced me..... I quickly backed up a few steps (stopping the timer on my Garmin of course) and let the stinky bastard go about his/her stinky business.  Situation averted, I moved on.  Then, about five miles into the run, the skies opened up and the lightning show began.  I cut the intended 10 miler down to 8 and decided I should live to run another day:)

My Garmin was way off for the first two miles of this run.  The 1st mile beeped much farther out than the usual lap mark & the second mile had me running @ a 6:53 pace, which I was definitely not doing at 4am in the morning.  It doesn't really matter though, because running is running and I love to do it!

I hooked up with my old highschool running partner today.  My wife was at work, so we ran around my hood for a couple of laps while my girls followed on their bikes.  It was nice to catch up and I hope to run with him again in the near future.

Please excuse my ignorance, but what is BQ for you. I understand that to run Boston one has to qualify, but what time do you need? I ask, as I noticed you put together a couple of handy 10 milers recently.

Surely, you must be in or around the pace necessary to BQ. If so, are you going to have a crack at it?

Hey Bam... let me assure you, ignorance & Bam are like oil & water, they do not mix.

Being 38 years old, the qualifying time for my age group is 3:10 - 7:14 avg. pace.

This being said, I have never run a marathon before, let alone a half marathon. In fact, the only races that I have ever lined up for have been 5k's. My running has been a bit sporadic lately with no real organization or set program. All of my runs seem to be of the progressive nature with the longest run of the year being a 13.1 mile jaunt.

I would like to think that I could run the required pace for me to BQ, but there is so much unknown for me that I can't be to confident. There is a marathon in late October near my abode... It is supposedly flat & fast. I have been thinking about it quite a bit.

I know that nothing beats proper training & workouts, but maybe latching on to a pace group would give me a better sense of security.

That's two good progression runs on the trot; yesterday's was a corker (great).

I wouldn't worry about your runs being progressive - that's the best way, so long as you don't run too hard too often and you cool down at the end.(Also, don't become a slave to the watch; it's great to get out there and run by feel - without the burden of the clock ticking.) The kenyans spend 3-4 years of running progressions before they even consider doing anything harder like speed work.

You might find that it works if you pick two days in the week when you put in a bit more effort on your progressions - like yesterday - and then ease off and enjoy the other runs.

Yesterday's run suggests that you're well capable of hitting the BQ mark...

Hey Claudio... It's the Baystate Marathon in Lowell MA. It's a double loop course that is supposedly flat & fast. I haven't been getting the running in that I would like lately and my long run for the year is 13.1 miles. I'd like to get a 18-20 miler in this weekend to see how my body reacts to the increased mileage. I've had some plantar faciitis issues all year, so we'll see. Do you recommend trying to latch on to a pace group?

On the P.F. issue, there was a great article recently in Running Times, on how to treat P.F. The fella who wrote the article is regarded very highly in the world of Physical Therapy - it might be worth a look. I'll root around in my magazines and see if I can find the article and get back to you. It's too difficult for me to explain how to treat it. The article has pictures:)

I was feeling really good today, but the unknown has been weighing on me lately.  Going into my first marathon I really have zero strategy.  Do I go out slow and assess how I feel a couple of miles in?  Do I try and run 26.2 miles at an even consistent pace?  I have no idea!

Ran this during the first half of my youngest daughter's soccer practice.  When I stopped to watch her practice, the scrimmage began..... perfect timing!  Paige played super aggressive tonight and scored the only goal! 

There is a contingent of English coaches in our town who spot children with talent and then try to recruit them for an every Friday for a year developmental league.  I was approached by one of their scouts about Paige.... later to find out it was $700 and some odd dollars for the camp and $150 for the uniform.  Yikes!  I might have to work on my English accent and teach her myself!

Pre-race:  I went to bed @ 9pm and fell asleep immediately without any problems.  I seem to lose sleep over the shorter distances for some reason.  Maybe I slept so well because I had no idea of the pain I would encounter after mile 20 or the eye wincing cramps that would begin after the race had finished.  Anyways, 4am arrived quickly and during the course of the next two hours, I showered, put all my gear in order, and double checked everything multiple times.  I ate two packages of Maple & Brown Sugar oatmeal and had a cup of freshly ground joe.  Looking back now, I'm more than glad I wasn't driving alone to Lowell MA, I would have my wife Amy, our two daughter's Maggie & Paige and my Mother "G" in tow. 

At 6:30am we arrived at the Parking garage near the Tsongas Arena...... runners everywhere with an energy & buzz in the air that was palpable!  Very exciting.

7:50am and it was time to get lined up..... happy now, but I had no idea what was in store.

BOOM.... and we were off!

mile 1 - 7:13 - Keep it under 7:15 just in case I start slipping later in the race.

mile 2 - 7:09 - I like seeing those seconds come off!

mile 3 - 7:04 - Dodging  cones and moving with the masses.

mile 4 - 7:03 - I can't believe I'm running a freaking marathon!

mile 5 - 7:03 - What a perfect day for a marathon.... does it get any better?

mile 6 - 7:13 - Hooked up with some young guys and put it in cruise.

mile 7 - 7:05 - Volunteer missed the GU handoff and threw it as I passed?  I stopped to pick it up.

mile 8 - 7:11

mile 9 - 7:02 - Marathons don't seem that hard.

mile 10 - 7:06

mile 11 - 7:00 - I'm a machine.

mile 12 - 7:04

mile 13 - 7:08 - I'm going to see my family here, peel off  the sleeves throw them in my wife's direction and yell I love you guys!  My children yell SCHNITZEL!!!! at me. (Hoodwinked)

mile 16 - 7:18 - Not psyched to see those seconds slipping, but I still feel okay.

mile 17 - 7:24 - Uh oh.

mile 20 - 7:24 - Uh oh.  Am I not a machine?

mile 21 - 7:52 - Wow these races do get hard after mile 20.

mile 22 - 7:54 - Damn!

mile 23 - 8:21 - How come I can't speed up?

mile 24 - 8:46 - When is this race going to friggin end?

mile 25 - 8:31 - I feel like crap.

mile 26 - 8:57 - Where is the finish line and how come it is so far away?

          .2 - 9:02 - Thank God!

All the highs and lows, were totally worth the satisfaction of completing my first marathon!  I was undertrained for sure, but plan on fixing that once I can walk normal again :)  Blown away by how hard it is to walk up and down stairs.  I can't wait to run again and make my goal time of 3:10 flat (BQ for 30-39).

Hey, not bad. Very consistent pace right up 'til the end. And 8:57 isn't terribly slow. It just feels like that after you've been cranking out low 7's for so many miles, and you want to be done.

If it makes you feel any better, I think I ran mile 26 in about 8:57 @ Philly last year. Those last 3-4 miles can be a bear. I think all things considered, a very solid marathon debut. You really held it together well through 22, and even though the wheels came off, they didn't come off too bad. With more training and experience, you'll nail that last 5K.

Fantastic effort off limited training. When you put your mind to something it's amazing what you can do.

There's an 'easy' 5-6 mins to come off that (miles 17-26) with a touch more training without the hinderance of P.F.

Then with a bit more training, you'll be under 3hrs. Simple. Well done and more importantly, well done for having a go and putting yourself on the line. Congrats.

Yep - turns out its not just a myth. No matter how tough you think you are (even if you ARE really tough), the marathon does get really hard in that last 10K.

I was walking to my car after work and decided to try and jog a couple of yards to the car.... I'm definitely feeling better, but still not ready to run. 

It amazed  me in the finishing chute of the marathon that some runners were walking around like they hadn't even run 26.2 miles.  I hope that is attainable and not just genetic for some and not for others.  I'm hoping that putting in some serious mileage (for me maybe 50-60 mile weeks) that I can pull off that fresh as a daisy look post marathon as well.

Claudio mentioned walking down stairs backwards..... that would have saved an awful lot of pain these past two days :)

First run since the Marathon 7 days ago.  I'm feeling a strain in my left calf and a pain on the outside of my right knee.  I could have pushed through, but why risk it and shelf myself for longer.  I have to be smart.... not always my strong suit :)

I went further this time before my knee started to act up.  I don't like how my body reacted to the marathon at all.  I know some people are slowly jogging just days after their marathons.  I hope it's just because it's my first and my knee is like "Whoa there fella... what's the rush!"

Pain on the outside of my right knee.  I'm so impatient it's unbelievable.  I do three days of exercises and I think that hmmmm...... maybe I should run and see if I'm miraculously better?  It's official, I think I'll really shut it down for a couple of weeks and rehab my ITB with hip, glutes and lower leg stretching and strengthening.
