2 mile warm up into a 4 mile (failed) tempo, followed by 2 miles back to work.  I call the tempo failed because I really don't know what my tempo pace should be and I took a 10-20 second reset after the first two tempo miles which were too fast for me.  I  could have gutted the whole 4 miles out at that pace and been a man, but I guess I just wasn't feeling that manly.

I didn't realize it, but I must have put on some "quitter" socks before going for my run.  After a mile and a quarter of running with bunched up socks underfoot, I looped back to my house to get some legit socks. Not being able to squeeze in a morning run, I started the jaunt at 4:25pm.  The footing was sketchy to say the least, and after the sun went down it didn't improve.  I clicked on the headlamp and after running halfway down River St., had a drive by from Kris Depew....... nice to see a friendly fellow runner.

I had an awesome run today while Paige, my ten year old, rode her bike :)   Paige kept telling me she loved me and I would respond "I love you too"..... it was a 9 mile love fest!  She also commented on how good it felt to be outside..... I couldn't agree more.

I had to include this awesome wagon with a toboggan on top!  This guy is serious.

According to Massachusetts law, hitchhiking is not allowed on turnpikes. This includes I-90. Hitchhiking other highways is allowed if you follow the rules of the road (stay on shoulder, walk facing traffic, do not pass 'pedestrians prohibited' signs)

Tough decision for the hitchhiker.

You can walk/run toward your destination facing traffic and hope someone going the opposite way is willing to pick you up and u-turn / go out of their way to drive you somewhere.

Or, take a chance and start walking away from your destination in the hopes that you get picked up, but risking that you end up even farther away.

I think I am doing Sugarloaf this year. Since I haven't seen by sub-3:00 pacer check in the mail yet, I guess I'm going for the win :-)

The hills from 7-10 are pretty significant. At the time I was running really flat areas and these were quite tough. That said you shouldn't under any circumstances try to maintain pace on them. I ran them 30-40 seconds slower than my average pace. You'll get those seconds back I promise you.

With no comic books available, Paige gravitated to the 6,8,10,and 20 sided dice in an empty aquarium.... that 5 bucks was really burning a hole in her pocket :)

I made a huge mistake and put off registering for the Sugarloaf Marathon.  With all the things that our money needs to go to, like bills, our children, food etc, I thought that I would be safe registering with over a month to go until race day.  Low and behold, when I checked the webstite yesterday, the marathon was full and registration was closed.  My heart immediately dropped, and I saw that there was a waitlist.  I put my name on the waitlist, and I am behind 40 other people just like me.  Needless to say, I can't wait not knowing if I will be able to run a Spring Marathon that aligns with my recent training.

Luckily, as I was scrambling to find another marathon, I found one on the exact same day as Sugarloaf in Nashua NH..... 30 minutes from my house.  

I am so pissed at myself.  I have been training with the Sugarloaf course in mind, and have really been looking forward to running with Tom K. and Jim Maloy (my companies VP of IT)  These two guys are some of the best around and I have spent weeks thinking about drinking post race beers with them.

Anyways, I'm done crying about it and will have to do my best to take out my frustration on the Gate City Marathon course in NH .

I won't be. I decided a few weeks ago the timing would work and although I'm in very good endurance shape, I don't have any real marathon specific stuff and I think the race would likely not go well.

Good luck. As I told Deron, there's really no reason to be on pace until mile 10 after the last hill. From there, buckle up! I think I dropped 7 second per mile average after 10 miles in 2013.

Tom... I thought I was ready for a PR in Boston last year and a combination of overestimating my fitness and hamstring cramps crushed that dream. I would love to run a 3:0? and maybe then put in a real training cycle (tempos, interval, speedwork) for a sub 3 in my next one.

Gate City Marathon - Nashua NH - 3:09:44

I ran a PR and met one of my goals..... get under 3:10 (barely)  It was windy as a bugger out there.  Full report to follow.

I woke up at 4am on Sunday morning after a solid night’s sleep.  My wife had ground the coffee beans and all I had to do was push the button for some heavenly French Roast.  Two cups of Joe, 1 packet of Maple Brown Sugar oatmeal and 1 half of a cinnamon raisin bagel toasted with butter.  I was ready to go.  I double checked all of my race gear and thought that I was all set.  It turns out that I forgot the “Gold” duct tape that I had intended to use to prevent nipple chafe.  I truly believe that the duct tape was the reason I didn’t run the Olympic qualifying marathon “A” standard last Sunday.

Pre-race, I was feeling good and my wife kept insisting that I drink more water.  The last thing I wanted to battle was dehydration, especially with my history of hamstring cramps within the last 10k of a marathon.  I also, for the first time decided to try some “Salt Stick” capsules.  I thought why not….. anything to stave off those evil race ruining cramps.  Being that this marathon was of the shamrock loop variety, I had my wife; girls and mother at the main intersection of each loop to provide me with extra water or needed encouragement.  This was a good idea.  Not only because I am challenged by drinking out of a paper cup while running, but there were only 181 people entered to run the marathon.  I had a feeling that I would be running alone quite a bit.

In the starting chute, I spoke to a younger looking runner and asked him what his goal time was.  He indicated that he wanted to BQ for his age (3:05) and was looking to run a 3:02.  He asked me mine and I said 3 hours followed by any single digit number.  Good lucks were exchanged and it was now just a couple of minutes before the gun.  A man started to sing the National Anthem, but unfortunately, the loud speaker cut out and he was barely audible.  The runners and the crowd picked up the slack and finished singing the second half of the song.  This was a nice touch that gave me goose bumps.

With the crack of a pistol, we were off!  I had a specific pace of 7:10 – 7:15 that I wanted to hit for the first loop of the race.  The first mile rang in at a 7:10, and I was on target.  Then the plan was abandoned and I just decided to go with what my body and legs were giving.  When I read the information packet for the race, it had said that water, Gatorade and gels would be at every two miles.  I call BS on this, and was hoping that there would be gels starting at tables during the second loop.  Thankfully there were gels at mile 8, but it wouldn’t be without the problems that occur when half-awake high schoolers are manning the station.  Coming up upon this table, I yelled out, “Are there Gels at this table!?”  A young girl lazily put her hand into a box and started to hand one to me as I was approaching.  She ended up dropping the gel and her cohort, another youngster, ended up throwing one that bounced off of my chest as I was twisting backwards for the grab.  This gel hit the ground behind me and I had to come to a dead stop to pick it up.  Smooth operation they had going there :)  Lesson learned, bring my own stash.

At this point during the race I was running with 3 guys,  two that were going for a 3:10 and another who was always about 10-20 ft ahead.  It was quite windy in certain sections of the course and I would try to duck in behind these guys as much as possible.  The lead runner eventually separated from our pack looking quite strong in doing so.  During the 3rd loop which was the same as the first, I pushed ahead as the 3:10 guys were dropping off.  I was now in “no man’s land” and had to carve through the gusty winds alone.  It wasn’t the kind of wind that would stand you up straight as you were leaning into it, but it was definitely noticeable.  

At the half way point, I was fighting the urge to pee, but I knew this was a losing battle.  The water pusher, my wife, is to blame for this.  I ducked into the woods and relieved myself.  I lost about 30 seconds during my mile 14 split.  Still running solo, I started my fourth loop in an off-road trail section called Mines Falls.  This area had loose gravel trails with the occasional root here or there.  I was in this section when the bad things typically rear their ugly heads during my races……. Mile 19 & 20.  I don’t know if it was going from pavement to a looser gravel material this late in the race, but I was starting to slow.  I was thinking “game over” and started to have some negative thoughts.  How could I be losing it after running higher mileage than ever before?  Maybe I’m not built for this distance.  I’m so F’ing pissed right now, and so on…….

Luckily, I hit the pavement after these two miles and was able to bounce back, which has never happened to me before.  I was also hoping that the 3 salt tabs that I had taken at 45 minute intervals would help to hold my cramps at bay.  I pushed up some of the final hills and rollers and couldn’t wait to be done.  I ended up passing the guy who was our lead runner during the first and second loop as he must have been struggling.  I also passed a guy who I never saw until the last 5k of the race, who had been reduced to a walk.  I felt really bad, as I can relate to hitting that wall hard during the final miles.  As I entered the finishing chute to cross the line, the clock read 3:09:44.  One of my goals attained.  My daughter’s Maggie and Paige were screaming…. You did it!  You did it!  Other than a couple of tiny pings in my left hamstring during the final mile, I held it together for a PR.

I met Kris up near his house and we went for a road & trail run.  Mostly trails.  I felt some deep soreness in my calves and knew that the marathon wasn't fully out of my legs yet.  All in all, it was a fun run and just what the doctor ordered.

Yasir... My wife has been running well lately. I'm really proud of her.

Dan... my next race (June 19th - Father's Day) will be a trail half up down and around the highest peak in Massachusetts. The Mt. Greylock trail race starts with a 3 mile ascent to the summit. At 1200', the staring line sits nearly 2300' below the summit at mile 3. It should be a real butt kicker!

Started at Nara in the lower parking lot and looped around to the back right side of the soccer fields.  From there I jumped onto the Nara Escape Trail which links to the Nashua Acton & Boston Railroad Trail.  After getting dumped out into a neighborhood, I was able to run down Powers Road toward Nashoba Valley Ski area.  I did two hill climbs up the Nashoba trail and looped around part of the Tiki Trail 5k course.  It was hot out and I headed back to the car.

I went to Marble Hill Conservation trails in Stow with Paige.  We jogged up one side and down the other and then climbed and ran back to some connecting trails.  As we were doing this, a brand new baby deer came running across the trail in front of us and then turned and clumsily ran towards and stopped about a foot away.  Paige and I stood frozen as the mother came crashing through the woods about 25 feet away. She was making this hacking sound which I assume was meant for us to back off, and for her fawn to get the hell away from those humans.  After about an 8 second stair down, the baby ran back into the woods following its mother.  Super cool experience and we didn't get hooved to death by an angry deer!
