My IT band issues haven't flared at all on this weeks 4 mile jaunts!  I'm going to keep it easy and do some more short runs like this and then if all things feel good, do some gradual build up.  I'm way out of shape right now. 

9 weeks of basically no running really tested my patience.

Beautiful weather outside........ 40' degree temps with partial sun.  My severe IT band issues seem to be something of the past.  The knee still feels a little off, but I'll take whatever I'm given these days :) 

The Old Acton Town Hall below...... it's a little over a mile away from my house.  I can't tell you how many times I've run past that building.... in either direction.  It's beautiful inside too, my girls took a Yoga class in the top section a couple of years back.

I got home from work and my new Saucony Mirage 2's had arrived!  It was pretty much dark out, but there was no mistaking the neon green & blue kicks on my dogs!  They felt amazing and I probably pushed a little too hard for the first go around.  I'll have to ease in to them since there is so much less of a drop in them compared to my Mizunos.

Freezing cold run.... even with all the layers.

It's in the high teens, but the wind chill makes it comparable to single digits.  The weather has been wacked this winter.... just a couple of days ago high 40's and then a day or two later a 20 degree swing downward.

There's a saying in New England.....  "If you don't like the weather, wait 5 minutes, it will change".

It is the coldest day in two years according to the local news..... I think it was 2 degrees when I got it my car and drove to the gym. (4:15am)  I ran 5 miles on the treadmill and thought I was the first person there, until about 3 minutes into the run, an old man who resembled Santa came out of the bathroom.  Needless to say, I was a bit shocked and wondered how long he had been in there.  The lights in the gym are all on sensors, since it's a 24hr facility and the place was completely dark when I arrived.  Another thing is..... there aren't any showers at this gym, so what was Santa doing in there?

I was happy when a couple of other fellas arrived minutes later..... crazy Santa!

5.5 miles - Treadmill

I set the treadmill up in front of the computer so I could watch some marathon footage from the 2012 London Olympics.  Both of my girls have been under the weather this week and it has really thrown off everyone's schedule.   Maggie my 9yr old missed her indoor soccer game this morning :(  I'm a co-coach and I feel for the other coach, as it is quite a task to get all the substitutions running smoothly even with two people working together.  No one ever wants to play goalie either..... what's up with that?

My wife came home from work and it gave me the chance to get out for another five.  Running outside is so much more rewarding.

Nice mix of singles and doubles. Once you get into the habit of doubles they become second nature. Smart that you're not overdoing the distances of the runs.

I grew up playing football everyday from morning to night and we used to make the worst player go in nets and then hammered them when they let in goals:) Maybe that's why nobody wants to play keeper. Not so much the stigma of being the worst player, more the beatings.

I have become quite fond of running o the treadmill. I know my gait is different, ad it doesn't exactly replicate road running, but I just love watching ESPN while running. I kind of am dreading the day when I can't say the roads may be icy or it looks a little too cold "so I'd better just go to the gym and hit the treadmill".

way to tough it out, man. i know the feeling well.

i've often referred to the "two mile rule." i initially came up with my own "15-minute rule," whereby you cannot quit a run less than 15 minutes into it, because before that point, you don't know if it's going to be a good run or not. a mr. quenton cassidy named the two mile rule (either in "once a runner" or "again to carthage," i can't remember which), in which the same principle applies, but you can't quit before you've run two miles.

it's amazing how much your body can get into a rhythm in two miles or less, and, if nothing else, it serves as a great self-inflicted mind trick (i.e., "well, i'm going to stop after 2 miles," which after two miles turns into, "well, since i'm already out her...")

Nice run. Good to see that you were man enough to run outside:)

You've been putting in a few doubles; If you can find a way to increase the shorter runs, you'll probably find that you'll make some good gains in your fitness. I suspect though, that you will not have time, as it looks like you're squeezing in the runs during your lunch breaks.

Keep plugging away. It'll be spring soon and you'll be able to run outside:)

After work, I changed into my running gear and headed out the door.  I decided to take a shorter yet more uphill route..... my legs are tired.  About a mile into this run, I saw a guy take a left onto the road that I was coming up on.  I knew right away that it was the same person that my wife and I always see running on that side of town.  He's probably in his mid twenties and he has a real springy gait..... almost like a gazelle.  It's actually a pretty fluid looking stride.  Anyways, I immediately picked up the pace like I always do when I have a rabbit in front of me and unbeknownst to him, shadowed him for about 400yds.  When he finally sensed me there, he snapped his head around quick and did a little scaredy jig :)  I can't say I blame him. I have had people come up quick on me and since I'm almost always solo, it can be quite unerving.  I was going to strike up some conversation, but I sensed it would be me doing most of the talking :)  Maybe next time.

3.1 miles - pretty good pace

The sun came out and warmed my old cold bones on this jaunt.

6 miles - after work - gym treadmill

This morning before work, I realized that we didn't have much in the house for food.  As my eyes scanned the vast emptiness before me, I spied two lonley hotdogs in the back of the fridge.  I then found some hamburger buns since for some reason there are only eight hotdog buns in a bag, yet ten dogs to a pack?  I would be having hotdog sandwiches for lunch!  I slammed those puppies down after my pre-lunch 5k and went on with my work day.  At about 2:30 I needed a coffee pick me up.  I went with the Big Easy Bold blend to make it to my 4'oclock departure time.  The end of my work day arrived and I walked across the street to the gym.  I was feeling caffeinated and jazzy!  The idea was to get in 7-8 miles and push the total for the day to 10 or 11 miles..... respectable I thought.  Once on the treadmill, I started off slow and stayed slow for the first 3 miles.  I began to feel lower abdominal pain at this time and went over a mental checklist of what it could be.  The pain and cramping got worse and worse, but I would be damned if I wasn't getting in those miles.  I realized at 5.5 miles that I was only going to make it to 6 miles, as I was in full clench mode running at a 7:30 pace.  I had visions of marathoners releasing themselves mid-run and thought better of wrecking the treadmill, and the workout of the woman directly behind me on the eliptical :)

I curse you Hotdog sandwiches and Bold coffee!

2k with my girls

This was Maggie's 3rd Groton 2k and Paige's first 2k.  They both ran awesome and Paige didn't finish too far behind her older sister!

 

Maggie came in strong and shaved about a minute off of her time from last year.  You can see Paige reeling in the boy behind Maggie.

 5k with my wife..... It was her first!

Amy ran awesome for her first 5k.  She only ran once before the race..... way to go Amy!  She was psyched that she finished her first race and is looking forward to more.

Okay, well not every run. (Do people get faster in the last 10k of a marathon? Does that happen?) I like the way you ramp up the pace in these training runs, though. I have a really hard time doing that. I was looking at bay state vs. your race this weekend. They are really similar races (flat, looped, temps, field size, etc.) You should be really "at home" in that race. Go get it, man!

A 21 second PR..... woo hoo stop the presses.  I'm happy that I came across the finish line feeling better than my first marathon, but not particularly pleased with the time.

My goal for this marathon was a 3:10 BQ.  I figured with my prior & first marathon ending up in a total collapse for the last 10k, I would try and stick to a 7:15 pace and push if I had anything left near the end.  I would also be running with Jim, a co-worker and the head of our IT department.  At 54 yrs old, Jim has run twenty five marathons with a personal best of 2:37 in his twenties.  Lately Jim has been running right around a 3:15 or so and I figured his similar pace and experience could only help.  Pre-race Jim and I discussed running together until one of us inevitably sped up or fell off.  Of course, being the newbie, I started talking to some guys around mile (8) who had intentions of running 3:10 and by mile (9) I was running a 7:07 pace and had left Jim.  The next couple of miles stayed under my MP and I started to feel crappy at mile (16).  What really sucks is not being able to pull it together and get back to your goal pace.  At mile (18) I was in damage control mode and couldn't believe that I was blowing up with 8+ miles to go.  Right around mile (23) the 3:15 pacer blew by me with some words of encouragement.  At this point I was feeling weird twinges in my left hamstring and thought "that's strange" and kept running..... 10 seconds later I had a deep muscle cramping/charlie horse that made me stop mid stride.  I immediately and instinctively grabbed the muscle and dug my fingers deeply into the hamstring.  It released after a skip/shuffle 15 seconds later.  At mile (24) and feeling like a total bag of crap, Jim my co-worker pulled up on my shoulder.  He told me the last 4 miles for him had been a serious struggle.  We ran together for the next 1.5 miles cursing the day when all of a sudden my right hamstring locked up...... WTF! I said out loud and Jim replied "I gotta go".  I watched him gain about thirty yards on me as I repeated the process of bear clawing my other hamstring.  Luckily it released and I started to reel Jim back in.  This time I pulled up on his shoulder and as I did, he said "Aww your the man!"  This little bit of encouragement got me going and I picked it up and separated from Jim.  With 26 miles on my tired legs, I pushed around the final turn and saw the clock at the finish..... It was going to be a squeeker!  I summoned all I had for the final push and came in 21 seconds faster than my previous & first marathon.  

Obviously the good news is the PR. No matter how small it was in conjunction with the fact that I came across the line not feeling like I was going to die.  I'm bummed that I didn't BQ, but that will happen another day..... I'm sure of it!

The first thing I did when you posted your splits for the Baystate was compare them to the 1st marathon, just like this. The times are really similar, but you picked it up after the 20 mile mark. The difference between splits in the first 20 are, like, 1-10 seconds, but there are @ 30 second differences in the late miles. That's what I would take away from this experience. You set a goal to step your game up late in the race, and you did.

Probably not too far.... after my first marathon I had severe ITB pain in the knee. I couldn't go more than .5 miles without having to stop from the pain. I was sidelined for 9 weeks.

This time it just seems to be on the brink of becoming a problem when I run. I have to get back to consistent hip, glute, hamstring exercising as a part of my routine.

Slowish run about town.  

On a different note, my wife works very close to a used book store.  A couple of weeks ago I went into the store and as always went to the Sports section.  Any of the running books that I have ever come across are labeled under "Other Sports".  In this section I came across a book that I had never heard of before called "Running with the Buffaloes".  Needless to say I didn't purchase it at that time.  I guess I wanted to hold on to the $2.99 they were asking for the nearly perfect copy.  A couple of days later I went on the old Interweb and read some reviews for the book...... damn it all to hell, all rave reviews!  I mentioned it to my wife and in between clients she went to the book store and purchased it for me!  She rules.

What actually caught my eye about the book was Adam Goucher's name on the cover. He has a really impressive running resume. Anyways, the book is the story of the Colorado Buffaloes 1998 Cross country season. I'll definitely let you know how it is.

I wore my heart rate monitor for this run.  At the end of the first mile I was at 148 and then fluctuated between 148-149 for the next 2 miles.  For the fourth mile I stayed at 149, but hit 151 by the end of the run climbing back into my neighborhood.  I'd like to wear the monitor more to see if over time I can drop my heart rate.

I'm obviously not a fast runner, and most, if not all of my miles are in the 7 minute and up range.  On the rare occasion that I do dip a nose hair under 6 minute pace, I almost feel like my legs are on the verge of buckling and falling apart..... it's a weird sensation pushing your body to a speed that is very foreign.

The highlight of this run was the two coyotes that I spooked in the final mile!  I was running down the road and they were coming from behind a house near the river.  When I first noticed them out of the corner of my eye, I thought young deer, but when I locked in on them, it was two coyotes. What a great day!  I PR'd in the 5k and spent some quality time with my family.  

This race was put on by the Miracle League of Massachusetts at Nara Park in my town.  At its core, the Miracle League of Massachusetts is an all volunteer, non-profit organization that gives children with disabilities a chance to play baseball as part of a team in an organized league at no cost to their family. But it's really so much more...  

This race was an excellent way to kick-start my Father's Day....... Happy Father's Day to all the Dads on the Fast Running Blog.

Barefoot around the perimeter of Rogers Field in Devens, MA.  I didn't feel like I was running that quick at all, but what felt like a 7:30 pace was actually about a minute faster.  It's funny that running shirtless and in the grass.....  made me feel like a kid again.

It was so hot out, but I was super lucky to see a young buck and a doe in the woods upon entering the trail about 1/4 of a mile from my house.  I spooked them as I was coming around a bend, and they would bound away and then stop and look back at me :)  It almost seemed like they were playing with me.  The last & final time we played peek-a-boo, the deer startled a hawk out of a tree and I was able to watch the amazing bird fly through the sparse trees in front of me...... what a start to a tough grind of a run.  It made it all worth it.

...in my experience, whereas stops at two pizza places and a donut shop make for great running war stories, they seldom make the run any easier at the time... (note tongue inserted firmly in cheek...)

100% humidity... I had the pleasure of dealing with that a couple times this week. Rain would've been much more pleasant. Even a cold hard windy rain.

Blue Heron's are awesome birds. Where I grew up we used to have a "pond" on our acreage and a couple of them would nest near there every year. They're huge.

I looked at you PRs and observed that with your 5 K speed you should be able to run sub-3:00 marathon. Then I was curious why you are running only 3:16, and I believe I found something that can help you.

Most of your runs are fairly short. You do get decent mileage most days total, but the problem is that you very rarely run more than 8 - this is acceptable for a 5 K but problematic for the marathon. If that is schedule related, well, then that is the best you can do. However, if you can find a way to get in daily runs that are longer than 8 miles this should help your marathon.

I also do not see a whole lot of long runs. Try to extend your long run first to 15 miles, then gradually up it to 20. Run the early miles of the long run slow to avoid overtraining but do last few miles of it fast - 7:00 pace or faster. Maybe start with the last 2 fast, and build it to where you can warm up 10 at 8:00 or so, then run the last 10 at sub-7:00 pace.

Make sure to take care of the recovery as those changes will put more load on your body. See if you can sneak in a nap, and/or go to bed earlier. Make sure your food intake is high quality - do not fill your stomach up with junk. As you train harder, the body often becomes more particular about what goes in. The third point in recovery is reducing stress. Little "fun" things are often more taxing than you think - budget your time and energy carefully.

Last week Sasha had given me some training advice.  I thought that I would give it a try.  He suggested that I needed more long runs starting out slower (8:00) and then in the last 5 or so faster (7:00) or below.  Well.... after yesterday off, I felt fresh and headed out into the rain.  My legs were feeling great and the rain and new running route into Concord, MA were keeping things fun and interesting.  Long story short, I went out too fast and tried to reel it in during the second mile but then ended up speeding it up again.  All in all........ very enjoyable.

My first Half Marathon.  I missed my goal of a 1:29:59, but I really enjoyed myself today.  The course seemed very rolly, but what goes up must come down...... for the most part.  The race is in my home town of Acton, MA and it was an innaugural race.  I must say it was low key, but very well put together.  With time and more opportunities to run this distance, I believe that I will be able to dial in the pacing better.  There was also prize money......

I don't know EXACTLY what you ate, but I get exactly a two mile cramp from syrup. It slows me down by about 30 seconds/mile. I think that's the only consistency in that cramp. Oh, and my kids' favorite meal is breakfast for any meal of the day. It's fantastic.

Hey Derhammer, thanks for stopping by! As far as running, I'm pretty inexperienced. I'm assuming LT is lactate threshold, but I really don't know what it is all about. Most of my runs are of the progression variety and look very similar day in & day out. If you have any suggested workouts or paces that I should be running based off of my times, it would be awesome!

I would love to qualify for Boston 2015. I'll be 40 in January and it gets a bit easier for me obviously as I hit the 40-49 age group. I just need to find a marathon and then get the proper training underway.

You would probably want to find a marathon in the spring and have a back up one as well in case something goes terribly wrong. All the fast ones up where you live - Mohak-Hudson - Wineglass - are in October. So those won't work if your goal is 2015.

I keep looking at the 5k PR of yours - is that recent - because with that time you should be able to run sub 3:10 marathon no problem - maybe sub 3:05 - with the right marathon specific training.

There were a lot of people at this race!  Hectic to say the least.  

After a 9 hour drive, we finally arrived in our Nations Capital.  We pulled into the Holiday Inn where we met up with family members who drove up from NC.  The mission for the following day (Saturday),  was to get to the Armory and pick up our bibs & packets & then go site seeing.  After some minor issues with some of us not being assigned numbers, our problems were squared away & it was on to the Washington Monument, World War II Memorial, Reflecting Pool, Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Memorial and Finally the White House.  At this point, and many miles of walking later, some of the younger folk in our party were starting to flounder a bit ane we knew it was time to get back to the hotel and relax before the early am start.  My brother-in-law who recently just came back from a tour in Afghanistan, had his own idea for relaxation and convinced me to go to the Hotel bar for a tall glass of Guiness and conversation :)  I was primed up to race!

5am rolled around with a blink, and my wife who has only run a 5k previously was ready to roll.  Some coffee, bananas and Lara bars did the trick for our pre-race nutrition.  We pinned our bibs to our shirts, gathered with everyone in the hallway and at 7am started the 2 mile walk to the Pentagon.  It was the perfect warm-up for the race, or should I say cold-up...... it was chilly!  After arriving in the South lot of the Pentagon, we started to get nervous with the size of the lines and how far away we were from our starting corral.  Long story short, last minute, the security people pulled back the barriers and we were able to run over to our starting wave and get the party started.

I have never run in a race that has had well over 25,000 people before and after our cannon blast start, found myself frustratingly weaving through runners, up on sidewalks, in the grass, shooting the gaps and generally not being able to find a groove.  This trend continued throughout the whole race but was very evident in my times for mile 1 & 2.  In my head I was struggling with the fact that I was going to have to make peace with the fact that this was going to be a slow go through out.  Things thinned out a bit ,but it was packed out there.  I am so proud of my wife Amy for taking down her longest run ever and finishing strong!  After her new found ITB issue goes away, she has told me she intends on training more and shaving time off of her 5K!  I love it.  I ended up finishing strong and am proud of my first ten miler.

Training doesn't mean anything, it all comes down to race day. I'll be screaming my brains out for you in Boston. I've been at mile 19 for the past 3 Boston's. I've seen Jake Krong fly by the year it was 150 degrees out, and that same year I screamed for "RatleTrap" & was rewarded with a high five. Last year I recognized Sean Sundwall and let out a bellowing yell for him, although he didn,t know who I was. All I'm saying is that you have been super consistent (cold aside) lately and YOU WILL rise to the occasion of BOSTON! Get pumped!

Freezing rain this morning.  I knew the trail would be a little sketchy when my jeep turned sideways on the downhill leaving my neighborhood.  Everyone out on the roads was on alert and driving very cautiously..... you know when New Englanders are driving 10mph on roads with a 40mph speed limit, things are bad.

Anyways, I met up with Gary at the Spring Hill Conservation lands and we very slowly began our run.  The roots and rocks were coated with ice and made the footing very treacherous.  The foot bridges were even worse, and if they were on an angle even in the slightest, you would slide right off the edge.  Long story short, no one got hurt and we managed a slow 6 miles through the woods.  8:39 avg.

Speedwork?  What is that?

Yesterday, my friend Kris asked if I wanted to do some speedwork.  Before his email, I had originally planned on something long & slow.  Then I thought about how it would be nice to run with another like minded human as I typically fly solo on my runs.  I agreed and we met up at the bottom of the hill exiting my neighborhood.  Kris had already marked out the distances on River St., as all the tracks in our area are covered in snow.  

Kris is faster than me and I pictured myself watching his back the whole workout or needing to sit out an interval or two due to my total lack of speed training.  After a slow warm up, we started some strides.  I think we did about six total.  Then we ran a mile and finished in 5:53. We then started our 800 intervals with two minutes of jogging between...... 4 total ranging from 3:00 - 2:51.  Next up we ran four 400 intervals with a bit shorter jog between.  To wrap things up we warmed down with about a 2 mile jog.  Kris will send me the data on this session, as I only had my Garmin recording total mileage.

All in all, a very enjoyable workout.  I didn't feel stressed or out of my element at all, and even felt myself pulling away from Kris at times.  As we parted ways, he told me that I kicked his butt on that workout. (Happy?  Just a little ;) It was amazing to me how the miles racked up & how enjoyable this workout was.  Hello Speedwork...... maybe you & I will meet again.

Strapped on my new Kinvara's & headlamp and left the house.  If I had realized that I was 1.08 miles away from a 70 mile week, I would have made the push.  Oh well, close enough.  The Kinvara 4 is definitely snugger in the forefoot than the Kinvara 3.  I hope they stretch some.  I might be joining the 2000 mile club tomorrow.

I am also breaking in some new shoes. Hokas. I can't complain about any shoe discomfort at home, as they were a gift. But they are not killing me, so I motor on. Much more snug in the toe than the Saucony Ride.

The Hokas - After 6 months of trying to correct my heel strike, I'm embracing it. They are surprisingly light, but they are still my heaviest shoes. So, I will not be using them on the track or in a 5k. I only consider the added thickness of the shoe, when I'm hopping a curb. I just want to make sure I clear it. They also have a non-traditional shoe lace thing that I'm still getting used to. Lastly, they are expensive, by my standards. $170 is @ $130 more than I usually spend!
