I had intended on getting a run in on the old beast of a treadmill in my garage since the roads were covered with snow, but after a few back jarring skips of the tread belt, I opted not to get injured on a treadmill.  The next 5.35 were run on hard pack with my Inov8 295 trail shoes.  They served their purpose.  7:53 avg.

I ended up pushing to hard per usual on my 15 miler yesterday and was rewarded with a sore left groin.  So, the thought for todays jaunt was take it slow and easy.  Here's how the run played out...... at approximately .67 miles into the run, I see a thin guy moving at a good clip coming towards me.  Low & behold Kris Depew. (my speedy friend)  I immediately bang a U-turn and ask what his plans are for his run..... "just a 4 mile tempo" he responds.  My next question is what kind of pace he's looking at, "about a 6:40 pace" he says.  Perfect, do you mind if I join you?  It turned out to be a great tempo, and I feel fine, but it really wasn't the smartest move on my part.  I can be a real knucklehead some times :)

From Derunzo on Sat, Feb 08, 2014 at 19:03:48 from 24.218.179.128

It wasn't an easy effort..... I was definitely struggling through this one. I feel like I should be running 8:00 min. + on these long runs. I'm always getting caught up in what the watch says. If I want to aim for something like a 3:10 marathon/7:14 pace, then shouldn't my long runs be averaging 30-45 seconds slower than that?

From Tom K on Mon, Feb 10, 2014 at 06:51:47 from 174.58.4.250

According to training paces calculators, yes, you should be running slower. But, it has become obvious that you are capable of much faster paces, right?

Are you sure you want to fix your "I can't stop running too fast" problem?!

It hit the 30 degree mark today at noon.  I was able to wear shorts, but still needed a hat, spring gloves and sufficient layers up top.  The day off yesterday brought some life back to my legs along with a right hamstring rub from my wife.  I gave her a back rub in return...... our relationship is not a one way street.

Anyways, on to the run.  I really felt good but decided that I would take it nice & easy due to the little niggles here and there.  I wore the K-Mart special watch and thus didn't have the beep every mile to remind me of my pace.  I figured with the effort level and ease of the run, I was probably running a 7:45 pace or so.  I was pleasantly surprised after mapping out the route and calculating the pace that I was actually moving at a 7:19 avg.  Rest days and shorts must be the reason.  Some runs turn out good and some not so good.  Wisdom....

So Durenzo, You live near the race? Can you give me some advice about what to do, where my wife and daughter should watch, etc.? We are staying near Fenway Park (forgot exactly what motel). We are coming in mid-day Saturday and leaving Tuesday morning. I'm not sure why we didn't plan for a little longer stay, I just wasn't really thinking about anything but the race when I booked our tickets and room. Thanks for any suggestions!

Hey Preston,

I live about 30 minutes west of the city.

To tell you the truth, I tend to stay out of the city if at all possible. A little to hectic at times for my taste. The girls, my wife and I have gone to the last 3 or 4 Boston Marathons and always head back to Newton at mile 19. It's fairly thinned out there and you get to see the elites clearly. Copy & paste this link for some good info :) Sorry I don't have better information, but I've only watched from two places... mile 19 & the couch.

I met up with Tom K. and his family down at Lewis Wharf in Boston.  Tom's wife found the coolest place for them all to stay..... a house boat in the harbor!  I have to say, Tom is blessed with a great wife and two very personable boys.

We ran along the docks and over a bridge for a total of 24:50.  A perfect shake out for Tom before the biggest race of his life!  We then proceeded down to the Hynes Convention Center for the Expo and race packet pick up.  Along the way we passed the Boston Common & Public Gardens where the buses will take the runners to the start in Hopkinton.  Tom was as chill as a dude can be before a huge race..... impressive.  I think things started to sink in a bit as we were approaching and continued to cross the actual finish line.  Everything was in place and there was an excitement in the air.

Good luck to everyone running tomorrow.  I'll be at mile 19 on the runner's right screaming my head off!

This turned out to be a pretty good run.

My wife had convinced me that it was a good idea to rent a hotel room about 200 meters from the starting line.  Having never done this before and always driving to a race the morning of, I thought why not?  Being able to have a good nights sleep and ample time to get ready in the morning could only help.  Saturday afternoon my wife, girls and I packed up the car and made the drive down to Providence RI.  We made it to the Rhode Island Convention center at 4 pm which gave me an hour to pick up my bib and gear bag.  At first, I couldn't find the expo because there was a HUGE cheerleading competition going on.  Thousands of young girls with sparkly makeup plastered on their faces..... it was like a bad dream.  Little did I know, that these same cheerleaders would be putting a major wrench in my race preparation.  With race bag in hand, we signed in at the front desk of the Omni Hotel and made our way up to the 12th floor.  The room was nice and clean and I was starting to get really excited.  My 10 & 8 yr old ladies were more interested in checking out the indoor pool than anything else.  After a quick recon of the pool area, we decided to find a place to eat...... now that's what I'm talking about!  We probably put a good two miles on our legs before we decided on Joe's American Bar & Grille.  I was looking for pasta, but decided on a burger and sweet potato fries.  My wife ordered the Chicken Piccata and the little ladies both got the "Famous" Joe's baked mac & Cheese.  Knowing that they both wouldn't finish their meals, my carbs were eagerly awaiting me.  My nickname is "Daddy Glutton".

Back to the room and stuffed to the gills, my girls invaded the pool area as my wife and I watched from the pool furniture.  After about an hour or so, we headed back to the room.  I prepared all of my gear and nutrition for the next day and settled into bed at about 10pm.  That's when I heard the first foot falls and giggling of young cheerleaders out in the hallway...... you have to be kidding me?  This continued off and on for the next couple of hours.  My wife actually jumped out of bed at one point as if to go in the hall and mass murder 20 young girls, but I calmed her down and called the front desk.  "Yes hello, I'm on the 12th floor in room 1213 and...... I was cut off right there.  The front desk girl said, "Yes the noise on floor twelve, we have received numerous calls and security is headed up right now."  Thank God...... my wife didn't have to kill anyone and my girls will have their mother around for at least a few more weeks :)  Anyways, the security only marginally helped and the noise finally abated around 1 AM.  Not the restful hotel room I was expecting.

On to the race...... Once again, I would be running this race with Jim, my co-worker and friend.  After eating some oatmeal, a banana an half a bagel, I was feeling good.  I had bought some GU's at the expo and was ready to roll.  Jim and I made our way as close to the start as we could, set our watches and BOOM!!!!  We were off.  Jim took off like he was running a half and I kept with him.  I knew that we would be slowing after the initial excitement of the first mile.  We slowed down to where I wanted to be (pace wise), and ran the next five miles together.  After a while, Jim turned to me and said that he thought that he was working to hard and needed to scale it back a bit.  I separated from Jim, and all of a sudden the 3:15 pacer and his crew pulled up next to me.  Mentally this gave me a little scare.... even though I knew that they were ahead of their 3:15 pace.  I ended up pushing ahead of them in defiance to make myself feel better. In doing so, I felt comfortable and strong.  This was a good early sign, as I never saw them again...... pheww.  The weather was ideal, sunny and in the 50's.  There was quite a bit of gusty wind in spots, especially along the water, but I've run in worse.  No excuses today.  At one point,  I had a mini-battle with another marathoner as he wasn't willing to let me pass him.  This ended up being fine as it took my mind off the pain of the second half of the race.  Eventually he slowed and I passed only to have him catch me a couple of miles later.  We yo-yo'ed like this for a while until the youngster (probably late 20's) fell off pace for good on a section of bike path.  See you later sucka!  The course was sprinkled with great support, including a guy that had a huge sound system in his front driveway blaring the theme music from "Rocky".  This was a nice touch, and kept me positive for the remaining miles.  I could bore everyone with a million more details, but basically I felt in control until mile 23 when the first signs of a wall reared it's head.  Nothing like my two first experiences with the wall, but I noticeably slowed in the last 3 miles.  I found another gear for the final stretch and cheesed it up by pumping my fist and holding my pointer finger in the air.  The hell with it though, I was BQing and I wanted to PARTY!!!!!!

Yeah...where's the Race Report!

From Derunzo on Wed, May 14, 2014 at 09:14:00 from 173.9.52.242

I'm too lazy to mouse click anything under fast miles.

I like Slowjoes goal of a sub 18 5k. Maybe I'll shoot for that.

I'm also thinking of a fall marathon.

I guess I should retype that report... geez.

Okay, I just checked your last 3 years. Apparently, you ran a "fast" 5k in June of 2013. Everything else has been "Slow" miles (like these). Seriously, what is a "Fast mile" to you?

From Derunzo on Wed, May 14, 2014 at 14:48:38 from 24.218.179.128

I guess below 7 minute miles? My marathon equated to a 7:18 avg. I wouldn't consider that fast. If I was able to run a sub 3 = 6:52 pace, then I would have to consider that fast for myself. What do you consider fast? Maybe I should adjust my thinking.

From I Just Run on Thu, May 15, 2014 at 12:51:02 from 67.79.11.242

Man...I went back and looked at all of his races and they all look fast!

From Tom K on Thu, May 15, 2014 at 13:35:50 from 174.58.4.250

I used to say that everything below 7:15 (my goal marathon pace) was "fast", and everything above that was "slow." (I also used to put ALL races as "fast", no matter what pace.) Then, I started documenting things like "last mile", and I would neglect to put the last "fast" mile under the appropriate heading. I still use the 7:15 standard for most runs, and I'll split it up on intervals, but I have a hard time breaking up miles within the same run. That's my long-winded answer.

Seems like you're bouncing back nicely from providence.

From Derunzo on Fri, May 16, 2014 at 08:55:41 from 173.9.52.242

Thanks Joe.... Just like you, this has been my best post marathon recovery.

I do think that I need to vary my pace more and get some good even tempo & speed work in. I've always just gone out and run whatever. Maybe a more structured program could drop my time more significantly?

From SlowJoe on Fri, May 16, 2014 at 09:19:29 from 168.215.171.129

Probably, depending on what the focus is. I made my biggest drop in the marathon (3:16 to 3:01) by following a Pfitzinger plan from his book Advanced Marathoning. Your 5k time is great, so I think you could go way faster in the marathon with an increase in mileage and some long tempos, if you wanted to focus on that. Marathoning season is definitely dead and over down here now; not sure about MA, but breaking up the year into chunks where you train for different events has helped me in the past, when I can actually stick to a plan...easier said than done!

From Derunzo on Fri, May 16, 2014 at 12:16:31 from 173.9.52.242

Thanks for the advice Joe! I actually have the book, but I haven't followed it as of yet. There is a fall marathon in MA that I may be targeting.... we'll see. Looking forward to you breaking the 18 barrier!

Mini workout that kicked my butt.  2.25 mile warm up down to the grass track in Fort Devens. On Google maps I could clearly see where the track was worn down, but being Spring time, everything was filled in and indiscernible. I was thinking of copying a Slowjoe workout from last week.  800's with 2 minutes rest. Needless to say, I am a newbie concerning these kinds of workouts and I didn't realize what I was in for. I intended on five intervals but could only muster four.... fail.  (2:55, 2:43, 2:43, 2:40) Wow, that was tough. 1.6 miles back to work.

My work is circled in red and the grass track has the arrow next to it:

Closer up:

This next one is the real track that I should run to (about 3ish miles from work).  It's a beautiful orange/red rubberized track..... I love it.  My work is circled again and the track has the arrow.

Race: The Great Lincoln Steeplechase (6.7 Miles) 00:46:17, Place overall: 7
Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance
8.050.008.05

My first ever trail race. Tons of fun.

I have had the Great Lincoln Steeplechase on my radar for a couple of years now.  It's not really a "Steeplechase", but more of a play on words since this trail race starts in a Church parking lot.  There ended up being about 70 entrants for the 2014 race.  I thought that my buddy Kris was going to run, but the stars didn't align for him and he couldn't make it.  Anyways, I wasn't feeling very competitive and thought that I might just make this a 6.7 mile trail jaunt instead of a race.  The temps were in the low 80's with some good humidity and my excuses for not wanting to run hard were adding up.  I saw some young cross-country guys and some very fit looking older dudes in the parking lot.  I heard one of the older dudes say that he was looking to run about 48 minutes.  Perfect..... I knew who I would be following for the beginning of the race.

Right from the start, a pack of fifteen runners took the race out hard.  I was content to stick with Frank, as I would learn his name from people cheering along the course.  Frank took us through the first mile in under 7 minutes. He was right on track.  I then felt him slowing and passed him on the biggest climb on the course, "The Stairway to Heaven".  There were actually railroad ties set into the side of this hill acting as a sort of staircase.  Once at the top, I ended up catching two young guys and hung with them for a bit.  I could tell that these guys were struggling and pushed ahead.  Right after the pass there was a rooty, rocky bomber of a downhill.  It was the type of hill that was so steep and long, that I was windmilling my arms on the way down riding the edge of out of control.  I made it to the bottom unscathed and was rewarded with some flat smooth single track.  I rolled through this section in no man's land for a mile or two.  After what seemed like a long time alone, I was able to see another runner far down a long straight stretch.  I had my rabbit!  I reeled the shirtless man in after a half mile or so and passed him just as we came out of the woods and onto the sidewalk for the last .7 mile stretch.  It felt good to be on familiar ground, and I was able to drop the pace to 5:59 and come real close to catching the 6th place runner.  He beat me by three seconds.  Not enough real-estate left for me to get him.  I know what he looks like...... next year.  6:54 avg.

I did a two mile warm-up and then wanted to do 4-6 800's.  I only had time for two with an active 400m recovery after each.  Oh well, I'll have to find a better time to do this kind of workout.

This is a picture of Eric Blake & Zach Miller.  You really get a good sense for how steep UPPER WALKING BOSS is.  Eric in the gray ended up finishing 3rd and Zach ended up in 4th...... top six make the US Mountain running team and go to Italy in September to race for the USA!

This race chewed me up and spit me out..... Halfway through, I vowed that I would never run it again.  Of course when it was over, I was thinking about next year.  Here's a picture of me on the final down before the UPPER WALKING BOSS.

Then bring the pain.  This section which is about one kilometer long, took me 21 minutes to power hike.  UPPER WALKING BOSS.....  Brutal.

You mean I have to climb up there?????  What the cuss!

One if front of the other..... My quads really hurt.

From Derunzo on Sat, Jul 26, 2014 at 05:49:43 from 24.218.179.128

It feels better now when walking, but if I try to break into a jog, I can feel the issue deep in the calf.

I've played this game before. Test it, hurt it, test it, hurt it. I just have to let it heal. I'll be woefully out of shape, but happy when this is done.

I've also been doing push-ups and light weights at the gym. Now only if I could stop eating. Sorry for the mini-novel :)

From rAtTLeTrAp on Sun, Jul 27, 2014 at 14:48:02 from 24.17.147.237

Give it at least a week to rest if it hurts to walk. You'll be even more out of shape if you drag this out a couple months like I did with mine :)

First run since 7/22.... how I've missed you old friend. I kept waiting for something bad to happen within the first .25 but it never did.... thankfully.

I can't say that the lower left leg felt completely normal, but it's a good sign that I was able to go a bit more than two miles and stop on my own terms. I plan on slowly working back into it, all the while doing exercises to hopefully keep the injury at bay. 7:24 avg.

I used a Pfitzinger plan(ish) before my first BQ. Dropped 15 min from my PR. The mid-week medium-long runs and the long runs with MP really get your legs ready for the marathon. It was actually the only marathon that I even-split. Definitely recommend.

I've used a similarish schedule. Mostly longer long runs with plenty of long tempo. Like Joe says, the medium long mid week helps. You can always do long tempos with warm and cool for midweek long runs (this is what I do. 3-4 up, 8-9 tempo, 3 or so down).

I would caution about the LT tempos being too long. If I had to run his suggested LT tempos up to 7 miles, we are talking 5:50-6:00 pace. That's too much. LT tempos should generally be 4-5 depending on level. For slower runners who run HMP closer to their everyday easy pace this might be okay. 2 minutes faster per mile from easy pace for me and you have a race effort as a workout.

It will be interesting to see how the Pfitzinger works for you. Heard a lot of good things about it, although I tend to train closer to the bottom end than he would recommend.

57 degrees and Sunny.  After yesterday's day off and today's low temps, I was ready to roll. Fastest opening mile I have had in some time (7:10).  I picked it up a bit after that and felt good throughout. 7:01 avg.

After reading Tracy's blog about Caning old men at Volleyball games, I thought that I would write about an experience that I had with a neighbor tonight.  This guy thinks it's okay to let his dog piss on my mailbox, piss on the rim of my car and shit in my yard.  Granted he carries a doggie poop bag, but still......I don't even own a dog, and if I did, I wouldn't let it deficate in my neighbor's yards.  There is plenty of open green space in our neighborhood, including this idiot's own yard!  This is the second time I have had to open my door an give this guy the business.  The first time was last winter when I noticed him letting his dog do it's thing at the top of our yard where my girls had built their sledding starter ramps.  The A-hole gave me attitude when I called him out that time!  Anyways, when this family first moved into the neighborhood from Cambridge MA, my wife was talking to her sister on the phone when she noticed their 10yr old daughter running down the street barefoot.  She couldn't believe her eyes when the girl took a hard right and proceeded to hike up her dress and crap in our front yard!  Really!!!!! C'mon Man!  I swear up and down...... true story.

So anyways, yeah..... I'm a little fired up.  Maybe I should take my morning duke in their yard before my run. Oh and after my longer runs, write my name in cursive on their front door.

5am.... Running in the rain, just running in the rain, what a glorious feeling, I'm running again.

I met up with Kris Depew at a trailhead just before the Cumberland Farms in Maynard. It was dark and I thought that I got there before him until he came up on my blind side and spooked me. When speaking to Kris yesterday at our respective daughter's travel soccer game, he indicated that he was looking to run 20 miles at a 6:40-6:50 pace for his Sunday long run. No thank you.... I would have to respectively decline. The majority of my miles have fallen around the 8-7:30 average lately and the thought of 20 at sub 7 minutes scared me. (probably because I've never run 20 at sub 7 pace) A couple of hours later Kris texted me to say he was thinking more like 7-7:10 pace.... I was in, but not for the full 20. It ended up being a decent run, but I think the pace would have been more even throughout if we could see better during the early trail miles. We made it back to Kris's house at 12ish miles, I was done and he headed out for 8 more. Kris is entertaining the thought of his first marathon in October and was looking to get a decent effort in. All in all, a fun wet slog. Always good to run with Depew.

I felt some cramping coming on in my left calf near the end of this run.  It mimicked the pain I had in the early stage of me injuring it a couple of months back.  I immediately backed off of the pace and just monitored it for the last half mile or so.  It feels fine a couple of hours later, maybe I was just a bit dehydrated heading into this run?  7:18 avg.

calf pain again?

From Derunzo on Tue, Oct 28, 2014 at 14:02:11 from 24.218.179.128

No calf pain this time. My girls had a half day of school today and I left work early to meet them off the bus. It turned out that I was early and had time for a 4ish miler. I drank more water than usual today, and I rolled my calves and did some theraband exercises. My thinking is to hopefully strengthen up some imbalances and get rid of some of these annoying aches and pains. Sorry for the paragraph of consciousness.

Damn skippy I would run. I believe I had the same situation as you yesterday. The day off due to the kids not having school on election day. I ran and it was at 1pm... not a lunch run.

If I had two hours to run I would probably run slower due to the increase in mileage. Speaking of which, I should probably get on that ramping up the mileage thing.

Incidentally, the north east is one of the only markets where a used Saab is worth anything (got mine in Maine and drove it there for the most part). Lovely machines, but a bit quirky. i'm here to break all of the posting rules and leave a comment about your K6 question from the other day...

the wear test rules don't allow me to talk about the shoe or describe it/show pictures before they actually come out, so i will just have to be vague. it's a great shoe. it looks like you have been running in the 3s/4s -- the 5s are better than both of those, and i felt like the 6s were just a bit of a tweak from the 5s but were yet again even better (see...vague). :) in past versions of the shoe (3 and 4), i've torn out the sides after about 300-350 miles, but with both the 5 and 6, i went over 300 and the shoes look barely worn. so overall they have improved in comfort and durability.

that said, i still prefer my skechers over any other shoe. :)

enjoy the K5 and keep and eye out for the K6!

Pretty good run for how awful I felt for the first 3 miles or so.  After seeing my brother in law in a hole in the road (he works for an excavating company) and stopping to harass him, the second half of the run was much better.  7:13 avg.

On a side note, one of the Massachussetts State Police barracks is a stones throw from my work.  They have been out training their attack German Sheperds for the past few days.  Of course, I have run up on these training sessions which have been in three different locations on my past three runs.  I slow down to a snails pace to make sure that the Police trainers see me and corral their dogs/killers before I feel comfortable running by them.  You should hear those dogs bark in anger as I run by...... frightening.

From Tom K on Sun, Dec 21, 2014 at 13:35:10 from 174.58.54.215

Seriously, nice run. So I plan on buying new shoes with the Christmas gift cards I'm going to get. I am phasing out the Hokas. They were good to me, but now I'd like some lighter shoes. I got Pearl Izumis a couple of months ago, and they may or may not have attributed to my achilles injury. Anyhow, your vote is for the Kinvara 5, right?

From Derunzo on Sun, Dec 21, 2014 at 13:56:12 from 70.215.25.190

I love the K5's. I'm not sure what the drop is in the Pearl Izumis, but it's a 4mm in the Kinvaras. If most of your shoes have had a 12mm or so drop, be careful when transitioning to the lower drop. That's how I injured my achilles.

From Matt Schreiber on Sun, Dec 21, 2014 at 20:40:10 from 66.17.102.175

That transition thing is touchy. I went from 12 to 4 and it took me a long time to fully transition. I had a real sore Achilles for quite awhile.
